Seven Ways Out of Boredom: A Free Field Guide for Calmer Dogs
A small, premium field guide on dog boredom — what it actually is, the early signs most owners miss, and seven research-backed ways to help. Free download.
Bored dogs aren’t naughty. Their minds are restless.
That’s the line that opens our first FurEver Yours field guide — a small premium booklet on dog boredom, what it actually is, the early signs most owners miss, and seven evidence-led ways to help a dog whose body is tired but whose mind isn’t.
You can download the whole guide as a free PDF — no sign-up, no email, just a click.
Why we made it
After a year of conversations with dog owners at shows, in shops, and via email, we kept hearing the same thing: “He’s been walked, he’s been fed, why is he still…”
The honest answer is almost always the same. A modern indoor life largely deprives dogs of the cognitive jobs they evolved to do — tracking scents, problem-solving, choosing routes. The result isn’t a tired dog. It’s a dog with a tired body and a restless brain.
What that looks like at home: chewing, pacing, attention-seeking, repetitive licking, vocalising at little. What it doesn’t usually look like is sadness. Which is why so much of it gets read as “naughty”.
This guide is our attempt at a useful, honest, plain-language answer.
What’s in it
- Why dogs get bored — the mental-vs-physical exhaustion most owners haven’t separated
- Signs to spot — six early indicators of boredom that aren’t sadness
- The science of sniffing — why 15 minutes of nose work can tire a dog more than an hour of walking, with the research behind the claim
- Seven ways out — the practical core of the guide. Some you’ll know. Several you almost certainly won’t. Each one carries the citation behind the idea.
- A calm-at-home page — what the journey adds up to
Honest about the research
Behaviour research is messy. Sample sizes are small, replication is uneven, and some of the ideas in the guide draw on theoretical frameworks rather than direct experimental studies. We say so on the page. Every claim carries a citation; some are stronger than others, and we flag the weak ones.
This is a plain-language field guide, not a scientific journal. We’ve done the work of finding and validating the sources. You can read the cited papers directly if you want the full nuance.
